About Penny Farthings

The penny farthing is recognised as the world's first bicycle featuring a mechanical structure, which showcases a striking contrast between the large front wheel and the smaller rear wheel. The pedals are directly mounted on the front wheel, creating a unique design that completely eliminates the need for a chain mechanism. For adult penny farthings, the diameter of the front wheel typically ranges from 40 to 60 inches, with some recorded instances reaching up to 85 inches, enabling speeds of up to 60 kph, when descending, it can reach 80 kph. Popular in Europe and America from 1870 to 1890, it was commonly referred to as Bicycles , High Wheel  or  Ordinary .

Differences Between Penny Farthings & Modern Bicycles

penny farthing
A penny farthing has a large front wheel and a smaller rear wheel. The rider's seat is positioned above the front wheel and is designed to accommodate the rider's height. Modern bicycles have wheels of the same size, and the rider's seat is situated between the two wheels.
Size
A penny farthing has no gears, and the pedals are fixed directly to the hub of the front wheel. Modern bicycle can adjust the speed by changing the gear ratio to adapt to different terrain and speed requirements.
Drive system
A penny farthing requires the rider to push off the ground with one foot to gain momentum and then jump onto the seat, while a modern bicycle allows the rider to sit down directly.
Riding style
In official competitions, penny farthings do not have a brake system, which leads riders to rely more on their balance and maneuvering skills when stopping.
Braking
Speed
Penny farthings can reach higher speeds than modern bicycles when descending hills, but they also require greater skill and control to maintain balance and safety.
