About Penny Farthings

The penny farthing is recognised as the world's first bicycle featuring a mechanical structure, which showcases a striking contrast between the large front wheel and the smaller rear wheel. The pedals are directly mounted on the front wheel, creating a unique design that completely eliminates the need for a chain mechanism. For adult Penny Farthings, the diameter of the front wheel typically ranges from 40 to 60 inches, with some recorded instances reaching up to 85 inches, enabling speeds of up to 60 kph, when descending, it can reach 80 kph. Popular in Europe and America from 1870 to 1890, it was commonly referred to as Bicycles , High or  Ordinary .

Differences of modern bicycle

Penny Farthing have a larger front wheel and a smaller rear wheel. The rider's seat is above the front wheel, and the size of the front wheel is adjusted according to the rider's height. Modern Bicycle have smaller wheels of the same size, and the rider's seat is between the two wheels.
Size
Penny Farthing have no gears, and the pedals are fixed directly to the center of the front wheel. Modern Bicycle can adjust the speed by changing the gear ratio to adapt to different terrain and speed requirements.
Drive system
Penny Farthing requires the rider to push off the ground with one foot to gain momentum and then jump onto the seat, while a regular bicycle allows the rider to sit down directly.
Riding style
In Penny Farthing official competitions the instrumentnot did no have a brake system, while Penny Farthing are equipped with brakes. This makes the riders need more dependent on the skills and body balance when stopping.

Speed
Penny Farthings can reach higher speeds than conventional bicycles when descending hills, but they also require greater skill and control to maintain balance and safety.
