The Founding of the APFA
The Asia Penny Farthing Association was founded in June 2024 by Dr. April Fong, the founder of Kakato Premium Pet Food in Hong Kong. The inspiration for the association came from a television program she watched the previous year, which featured an annual penny farthing race in a small town in Tasmania, Australia. Captivated by the sport's unique challenges, Dr. Fong conducted extensive search before having her first experience with penny farthing in Australia, October 2023. On that day, she decided to have her penny farthing custom built and participate in The National Penny Farthing Championship 2024. Although she did not achieve any rankings in the five races she entered, Dr. Fong took pride in completing all of them safely after just under a total of six hours of practice.
The establishment of the Asia Penny Farthing Association is a vision that Dr. Fong conceived following her initial encounter with the sport. Her goal is to introduce the sport to Hong Kong, raise public awareness, cultivate local athletes, organise competitions, and train local elites to participate in overseas events. Ultimately, she aspires to host international competitions locally and / or to promote penny farthing across other Asian countries and regions.

Our association is based in Hong Kong and aims to promote positive thinking through the sport of penny farthing, encouraging a proactive and optimistic attitude toward life and various obstacles. We seek to break down gender and age barriers, inspiring everyone to embrace new experiences and pursue their aspirations.
We aim to raise awareness of the historical and cultural significance of penny farthing, encouraging adults to step outside their comfort zones and challenge themselves through this unique sport, reigniting the competitive spirit of their youth. We strive to cultivate children's interest in penny farthing, guiding them to master unique and distinctive skills.
By developing the entertainment and fitness industries focused on penny farthing, we aim to create diverse opportunities that inspire a resilient spirit of challenge, allowing everyone to view the world from a new height.
With a spirit of revival and determination, we are dedicated to promoting and developing penny farthing sport through the following initiatives:
1. Cultivating local penny farthing athletes
and organising competitions in Hong Kong;
2. Training elite local penny farthing athletes
to participate in international events;
3. Hosting international penny farthing
competitions in Hong Kong to enhance its
standing in the global sports arena;
4. Expanding its reach to attract global talent to
participate in competitive tournaments and
promote cultural exchanges organised by
the association.
